Naturally occurring moissanite exists but is extraordinarily rare in gem-usable quantities. Every moissanite in every ring you'll look at today is synthesised, which adds a small irony to how the comparison is usually framed. Both stones come from a laboratory. Only one is a diamond.

How they actually look

This is where moissanite polarises buyers.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond: 2.65 versus 2.42. In small sizes, the difference is subtle enough that most people can't distinguish moissanite from diamond without a loupe. At 1ct and above, moissanite's fire becomes noticeably more intense.

For daily wear, the practical difference between 9.25 and 10 is minimal. Neither stone will scratch from normal use. Is moissanite better than lab-grown diamond?

Better at what?

Moissanite is cheaper per carat. Full stop. At $300 versus $700 to $1,200 for a comparable lab-grown stone, you get significantly more size for the same budget. If you want a 2ct centre stone and have $800 to spend, moissanite can get you there. Lab-grown can't.

Moissanite is also better if you actively prefer its optical character. Higher fire, more colour dispersion, a flashier look in bright light. Some buyers genuinely want this, and that's a legitimate preference with its own merit.

Lab-grown wins if you want an actual diamond. Not a diamond alternative, not a material that resembles diamond in certain conditions. A diamond. Same carbon, same hardness, same chemical identity as a mined stone. If the person wearing the ring knows the difference between silicon carbide and carbon and cares about it, lab-grown resolves that directly.

There are buyers who genuinely don't care about the distinction. That's a legitimate position too. The ring matters; the chemistry doesn't. If that's your situation, moissanite at a larger size for the same money is an entirely rational choice.

Lab-grown also has the advantage on certification. An IGI or GIA graded stone has documented colour, clarity, and cut grades from an independent laboratory. Most moissanite sold today is graded by the manufacturers themselves. Both systems are widely accepted, but they're not equivalent in terms of third-party verification.

When moissanite makes sense, and when it doesn't

If budget is genuinely tight and visual size is the priority, moissanite earns its place. A 2ct moissanite at around $600 is a real stone with real sparkle. The buyer knows what it is; the question is whether that matters in their specific situation.

For a moissanite engagement ring to work well, the person wearing it needs to be comfortable with what it is. Not every partner is, and that's worth knowing before you buy. If there's any ambiguity, a direct conversation before purchase saves a great deal of difficulty afterward.

At 0.5ct to 0.75ct, moissanite and lab-grown are close enough in price that the diamond question becomes straightforward to resolve in favour of lab-grown. The premium for a certified lab-grown stone at that size is small. At 1.5ct and above, the gap widens considerably, and moissanite earns its place as a genuine alternative rather than a budget compromise.
