The median gap between the cheapest and most expensive listing for the same stone widened to 111.9% in September, up from 81.9% in August and the highest reading in seven months of data. That's a 36.7% jump in a single month, and it pushed the spread past the point where the typical cross-listed stone is available at roughly double the price somewhere else in the market. Cross-retailer overlap fell simultaneously to a matching record low of 44.6%, down from 50.2% in August. Retailers are carrying more unique inventory, and where they do share stones, they're pricing less consistently than they have all year.

The volume numbers support a market in expansion mode. Nearly 18.9 million new listings entered the market in September, roughly three times the monthly rate from March through July, while only 2.97 million went off-market. Active inventory closed at a record 45.5 million stones with a total listed value of $143 billion, also the highest in this window. But price is running the opposite direction. Median price per carat fell to $811.36, down from $937.50 in August and a record low over seven months. The median stone lists at $1,052. The market is bigger than it's been; it's also cheaper than it's been.

Lab-grown's share of new listings came in at 63.2%, the lowest reading in this dataset though barely off August's 63.6%. The more meaningful number is the per-carat gap: natural diamonds entered at a median of $2,221.80 per carat against lab-grown's $382.05, a ratio of roughly 5.8 to 1. Natural listings added 6.66 million new stones at a median price of $1,400; lab-grown added 12.28 million at $780. For a buyer considering both origins at a fixed budget, that ratio continues to stretch in lab-grown's favour.

Shape pricing moved in both directions. Trillion cut jumped 71.6% to a median of $1,203.98, though volume was thin at 7,325 new listings, so that's a composition story more than a demand signal. Cushion was the more credible mover, up 6.8% to $1,424. Rounds edged higher by 5.1% to $830.58 and retained their dominant position with over 8.59 million new listings, nearly four times oval's 2.64 million. On the softer side, asscher dropped a sharp 38.2% to $1,217.83 and heart fell 25.5% to $986.56. Both shapes had been pricing at a premium earlier in the year; that cushion is largely gone now.

September's most expensive new entry was a 25.65ct E/VVS2 pear natural at $3,129,956, closely followed by a 1.8ct Fancy Vivid Pink radiant at $3,062,628. The fact that a stone under 2 carats can price within $70,000 of a 25-carat stone is the fancy colour market doing what it always does. At the other end of the size scale, an 80ct fancy pear natural entered at $2.5 million, and a 62.96ct lab-grown emerald appeared across the retailers I track at prices ranging from $162k to $258k, a spread of $96,000 on a single stone. That last detail is a neat illustration of the month's defining theme.

October will tell us whether the spread widening is a lasting structural shift or a September spike. If overlap keeps falling and new listings continue at this pace, the gap between the best and worst price for any given stone may widen further. For buyers, that means comparison shopping is worth more now than it was six months ago.
