The round tax inverts in lab grown: how 921,467 matched-spec listings show round is the most expensive natural shape and the cheapest lab shape

The diamond trade has long described round brilliants as the most expensive shape per carat. Buyers are told this is because of cutter yield: a finished round brilliant requires sacrificing roughly 60% of the input rough, the highest waste of any standard shape, so the per-carat price reflects that cost. Across 234,381 active natural-round-equivalent listings at matched D-F colour and VVS1 to VS2 clarity in 1ct cohorts, the natural round commands a per-carat median of $5,699 against $3,050 for cushion (the cheapest shape) and $5,901 for marquise (the highest-priced shape). The "round tax" is real on natural. On lab-grown the same matched-spec analysis covering 687,086 listings shows round at $691 per carat, the cheapest of the 10 mainstream shapes. Heart leads lab pricing at $791 per carat. Reactor economics do not penalise round cutting the way mining-driven yield economics do, so the centuries-old round premium structurally inverts in the lab cohort. Data as of 19th April 2026.
What the standard advice says
The shape-pricing rule of thumb in retail buying guides is a single sentence: "Round costs more per carat than any other shape because cutters lose more rough to make a round." The advice goes back at least to the 1970s and predates modern cutting optimisation. Round retains the highest yield-loss profile among the 10 standard shapes used in retail diamond markets. Cutters working from a typical octahedral natural rough sacrifice approximately 50% to 65% of the carat weight to finish a round brilliant, against approximately 35% to 45% for an emerald cut and approximately 30% to 50% for a princess cut.
The advice is correct on the natural side and has been correct since modern shape pricing emerged. The lab-grown side breaks the assumption. CVD and HPHT reactors produce rough that is approximately tabular or cuboid depending on the growth method. Cutting any of the 10 standard shapes from a lab rough involves modest waste and broadly comparable per-carat cost. The yield differential that justifies the natural round premium does not transfer.

Final cohort: 921,467 listings spread across 10 shapes and 2 origins. The matched-spec restriction (one carat tier, top three colours, top four clarities) controls for the cross-cell variation that would otherwise contaminate a shape-vs-shape comparison. Per-carat median is the cleanest metric because the carat distribution within each cell is tight: every cell falls inside the 0.95-1.05ct window, so per-carat numbers are directly comparable.

Heart is at $3,693 (n=21,940), 35% below. Asscher is at $3,534 (n=6,919), 38% below. Cushion is the floor at $3,050 (n=18,383), 46% below round and the cheapest natural shape in the cohort.

Two structural patterns visible in the comparison.
The spread across shapes collapses on lab-grown. Natural pricing runs from $3,050 (cushion) to $5,901 (marquise), a 1.93x ratio. Lab pricing runs from $691 (round) to $791 (heart), a 1.14x ratio. Lab manufacturers produce all 10 shapes at broadly similar economics, and the price differences that survive in lab reflect demand and cutter time rather than rough yield.
The shape ranking does not just compress, it reorders. Round is the second-highest-priced natural shape and the lowest-priced lab shape. The reordering is exactly what the yield-loss explanation predicts. Reactor economics replace mining-rough economics. The cost driver that put round at the top of the natural premium ladder disappears. Round drops to the bottom of the lab ladder because lab supply at round is overwhelming (274,350 listings, more than 2x the next shape).

The natural-side "round tax" is visible in dollars: $2,659 of additional spend for choosing round over cushion at the same gemological specification.
Lab side: IGI 772670434 is a 1.01ct lab round D VS1 listed at $705, at the lab-round cohort median. IGI 577361909 is a 1.02ct lab heart D VS1 listed at $809, at the lab-heart cohort median. The lab heart lists 15% above the lab round at matched specs. The lab-side "round discount" is visible in dollars: $104 less to choose round over heart at the same gemological specification.

Why the inversion matters for buyers
If your decision is shape-first ("I want a cushion"), the cohort tells you what your spec choice costs in absolute terms. On natural at 1ct D VS1, choosing cushion over round saves roughly $2,650. Choosing emerald saves roughly $1,800. Choosing marquise costs roughly $200 more than round. The dollar costs here are stable enough that buyers comparing across shapes can budget against the cohort medians directly.
If your decision is round-first ("I want a round, what does it cost"), origin choice is the dominant pricing lever, not shape. A natural round at 1ct D VS1 lists at a cohort median of $5,744. A lab round at the same spec lists at $705. The natural-versus-lab decision moves $5,000 of spend per carat. Within natural, swapping shape moves at most $2,850. Within lab, swapping shape moves at most $100. Origin first, shape second.
If you are buying lab and shape preference is loose, round is now the bargain shape at the cell median. The supply on round is also the deepest (274,350 listings against 16,209 for heart), so retailers compete more aggressively on round and the price advantage compounds. Buyers who would normally avoid round in lab to dodge a perceived premium are following an outdated heuristic. The lab market has reset the round-premium assumption.
A note on face-up size, not just carat weight
The cohort medians compare prices at matched carat weight. Buyers often care about visual size (face-up surface area), not weight. The relationship between carat and face-up size differs by shape: a 1ct round measures roughly 6.5mm in diameter; a 1ct oval measures roughly 7.7mm in length; a 1ct cushion measures roughly 6.0mm by 5.8mm; a 1ct emerald measures roughly 6.5mm by 4.5mm. An oval and a round at the same carat present different visual scales. A buyer prioritising face-up size who wants visual presence at "1ct" pricing should compare ovals at 0.85-0.95ct against rounds at 1.00-1.05ct (similar visual presence, lower carat-weight pricing on the oval).
The cohort numbers in this article are matched-carat. A face-up-size-equivalence cohort would compress the natural-round premium further (because oval at 0.90ct sits closer to round at 1.00ct in visual terms) but does not change the structural finding that round is the cheapest lab shape.
Limitations
The cohort restricts to D-F colour and VVS1-VS2 clarity. Lower colour and clarity bands may show modestly different per-shape patterns, particularly for shapes that mask inclusions better (radiant, princess) or worse (emerald, asscher with their step-cut facets). The directional finding (lab inverts the natural round premium) holds across reasonable colour and clarity expansions but the precise per-shape percentages will shift.
Carat tier matters. We report matched 0.95-1.05ct. At higher carats (2ct+), the natural shape spread widens because larger rough is rarer for shapes that lose more material in cutting. Lab pricing at higher carats remains compressed across shapes for the same reactor-economics reason. The structural asymmetry between natural and lab grows with carat, not shrinks.
Sample sizes are smallest on niche shapes. Natural marquise (n=4,373) and natural asscher (n=6,919) are the smallest cells reported here. The medians are stable at those sample sizes but the 90th-percentile estimates would be noisier. Cells with n below 3,000 (none in this cohort) would be reported as informational rather than primary findings.
