Round brilliants dominate diamond sales globally, and they dominate our index too. With 1,224,204 natural and 2,103,598 lab-grown round listings currently tracked across 110+ retailers, this shape accounts for more active inventory than any other by a factor of roughly 2.5. All that competition compresses the lab vs natural price gap in ways the trending fancy shapes simply can't match.

At 80.6%, the round diamond lab vs natural gap is still enormous. But compared to ovals at 83.1%, cushions at 83.9%, and radiants at 86.2%, the round spread is noticeably tighter. The lab-grown column is remarkably flat. Rounds at $413 per carat, ovals at $416, cushions at $416, radiants at $375. Barely $40 separates the four most popular shapes on the lab-grown side. The real differentiation lives in the natural column. Natural rounds at $2,126 per carat sit well below natural cushions ($2,587), ovals ($2,459), and radiants ($2,712). Competition in the natural round market is fierce enough to keep prices lower than shapes with a fraction of the listing volume.

That's the mechanism. Rounds have a tighter lab vs natural spread not because lab-grown rounds cost more, but because natural rounds cost less. Volume creates pricing efficiency, and nothing in the diamond market has more volume than a round brilliant.

A note on the table: pear and emerald shapes show even tighter discounts at 78.4% and 78.8%. But their combined listing volume is less than half the round market. Among the high volume shapes driving the bulk of buyer decisions, round is where the gap narrows most.

Why natural rounds resist the slide

Three forces keep natural round pricing sturdier than you might expect.

Cutting yield is the first. The round brilliant wastes more rough crystal than any common fancy shape. Producing a circular outline from a naturally octahedral rough diamond means sacrificing material that ovals, cushions, and radiants would preserve. That lost weight is baked into every natural round's cost, and it's a cost lab-grown production largely sidesteps since lab rough can be engineered for the target shape.

Demand depth is the second. Round brilliants aren't trending. They're permanent. Ovals have had a remarkable run in recent years, and cushion modified brilliants sell well. But the round has been the default engagement ring shape across most Western markets for over a century, and that kind of demand isn't going anywhere.

Grading infrastructure is the third. The round brilliant is the only shape receiving a formal cut grade from GIA. Excellent and Ideal designations create well-cut premiums with no direct parallel in fancy shapes. A natural round with Excellent symmetry and Excellent polish commands a meaningful premium over a Good rated stone of identical carat, colour, and clarity. Natural round pricing has a peculiar feature every seasoned buyer knows: psychological carat thresholds. A 0.99ct natural round costs meaningfully less per carat than a 1.00ct. Same dynamic at 1.49ct versus 1.50ct, and 1.99ct versus 2.00ct. These aren't quality differences. They're emotional benchmarks. Buyers want to say "one carat," and the market charges for that privilege.

Our index tracks these threshold effects across over 1.2 million natural round listings. The bump at 1.00ct is the most persistent and most exploitable. Smart natural diamond buyers shop just below: a 0.95ct or 0.97ct round looks identical to a 1.00ct on the finger, but per carat pricing drops substantially.

Lab-grown rounds compress this effect nearly to nothing. With a baseline of $413 per carat, even a 10% threshold premium amounts to about $41 per carat. On a $2,126 natural median, that same 10% is $213. The magic number tax costs roughly five times more on the natural side in absolute terms. Buyers shopping for a round brilliant lab grown stone can focus on what actually affects appearance: colour, clarity, and cut quality.

At the 2.00ct boundary, the effect intensifies. The per carat premium for crossing from 1.99ct to 2.00ct becomes a larger absolute figure as stone prices rise. Lab-grown pricing barely registers the boundary. Natural buyers gain meaningfully from shopping just below round carat numbers, while lab-grown buyers can treat carat weight as a continuous scale rather than a series of price cliffs.

What a good round deal actually looks like

For a 1 carat round price comparison, a natural stone in the G to H colour range with VS2 clarity and Excellent cut will sit above the overall $2,126 per carat median, since smaller and lower quality stones pull that figure down. A natural 1ct G VS2 round at or near $2,000 per carat represents solid value. A lab-grown equivalent at the $413 per carat median lands under $500. Buying a carat diamond for under $500 still surprises anyone who shopped five years ago.

At 1.5ct, natural round pricing crosses into the second magic number zone. Per carat costs climb and the absolute stone price reaches levels where comparison shopping pays for itself many times over. A few hundred dollars per carat difference between retailers translates to $300 to $500 on the final price. At 2ct, the lab vs natural gap becomes difficult to ignore in dollar terms. A natural 2ct round at the overall median of $2,126 per carat runs $4,252. A lab-grown equivalent near $413 per carat is $826. That's a $3,426 difference on a single stone. For budget-conscious buyers who prioritise size and sparkle over origin, the 2ct lab-grown round is one of the strongest value plays in the market.

Within the round market, the gap between a competitively priced stone and an expensive one for the same spec often exceeds the gap between adjacent colour or clarity grades. A G VS2 round from a competitive retailer can represent better value than an H VS1 from an expensive one. Comparison across retailers matters more than agonising over one grade in either direction.

Part of the complexity is that round brilliants have more measurable variables than any other shape. Cut quality, proportions, fluorescence, and light performance all create legitimate price differences between stones sharing the same four Cs on paper. Two 1.50ct G VS2 rounds with Excellent cut grades can perform quite differently depending on table percentage, crown angle, and pavilion depth. The stronger performer will rightly cost more. But plenty of the variance we observe across retailers has nothing to do with stone quality and everything to do with business model.

The lab-grown side is especially fragmented. Over 2.1 million listings compete for attention, and pricing at the aggressive end undercuts the median considerably. Some retailers appear to use lab-grown rounds as traffic drivers, pricing below the median to attract buyers who then purchase settings or jewellery. That's good for shoppers, but it makes a cross-retailer comparison essential rather than optional.

Round brilliants occupy a unique position. The 80.6% lab vs natural gap is enormous, yet it's the tightest spread among the shapes that dominate buyer interest today. Natural round pricing benefits from deep liquidity, higher cutting costs, and a century of demand that hasn't broken.
