I1 is where inclusions move from "hidden" to "plainly visible" for most stones. Beyond appearance, I1 introduces a durability consideration: large inclusions near the girdle or under high-stress facet junctions can create fracture risk. Carat Hunter does not recommend I1 for engagement rings worn daily unless the plot confirms the inclusions are well-positioned and the setting protects the girdle.

Frequently asked questions

Is an I1 diamond safe to wear?

Usually yes for occasional wear. For daily wear engagement rings, prefer SI2 or higher. I1 inclusions can create durability concerns depending on position.

How obvious are I1 inclusions?

Often visible at arm's length without magnification. This is the threshold where clarity becomes a visible feature, not a microscopic one.

Why would anyone buy I1?

Price. I1 can be 50-70% cheaper than VS1 at the same carat and colour. Some buyers accept the trade for maximum size on a tight budget.

Can I1 inclusions cause the diamond to break?

Rarely but possible. Inclusions near the girdle, extending to the surface, or at points of high stress can propagate into fractures under impact.

Do jewellers warranty I1 diamonds?

Most will, but chip warranties may be voided if inclusions contributed to the failure. Read the fine print.
