Is GCAL Certification the Right Choice?
Gem Certification & Assurance Lab (GCAL) is a newer US-based grading lab known for its 'zero tolerance' grading philosophy and its optical performance certificates. GCAL certificates come with a consumer-protection guarantee that's rare in the industry, and the lab is particularly focused on stones with high-quality light performance, 'hearts and arrows' cut stones.
Stones carrying a GCAL certificate trade at roughly a 38.0% discount to the market baseline. That can reflect genuine value (the same stone graded by a different lab would cost more) or a market signal about grading strictness. It depends on the lab. Consider getting a second opinion from an appraiser before buying high-value stones.
GCAL certificates cover 145,564 listings in our database, and the overwhelming majority are lab-grown, 145,545 lab stones vs 19 natural. This is the lab-grown industry's dominant certificate: efficient, affordable, and comfortable with the volumes of lab output hitting the market.
Most of the GCAL-certified inventory we track is in OVAL (39,128 listings). Consistent with round being the default for engagement-ring buyers. If you're shopping fancy shapes, selection thins out quickly across every lab; widening your search to two or more certificate issuers often doubles the available inventory.
GCAL is the right cert to look for if optical performance is a priority. The certificate includes ASET and Idealscope imaging that show you exactly how the diamond returns light. For general buyers GCAL is not as widely recognised as GIA, so resale value may be marginally weaker, but the quality of the grading itself is excellent.
