Is EGL Certification the Right Choice?

European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) has a long history in the diamond trade, but its grading has been controversial for decades. Different EGL offices (EGL International, EGL USA, EGL South Africa) have graded to different standards, and historically EGL-graded stones have traded at a discount to GIA on the secondary market because the grades don't always hold up under re-grading.

Stones carrying a EGL certificate trade at about a 208.5% premium over the market baseline in our data. That's the 'GIA effect' at work. Buyers trust the grading rigour and are willing to pay for it. If you're going to resell the stone or want the most conservative paper trail, the premium is real and worth considering.

EGL certificates cover 4,599 listings in our database, and the mix skews heavily natural, 3,677 natural stones versus 922 lab-grown. That's the classic pattern for long-established gemological labs whose reputation was built around natural diamond grading.

Most of the EGL-certified inventory we track is in ROUND (1,672 listings). Consistent with round being the default for engagement-ring buyers. If you're shopping fancy shapes, selection thins out quickly across every lab; widening your search to two or more certificate issuers often doubles the available inventory.

Approach EGL with more caution than other majors. The paper grade on an EGL cert may not match what GIA or IGI would give the same stone. Sometimes by a full color or clarity grade. If you're buying an EGL stone, ask for a second opinion or budget for a re-grading. The discount is often real, but so is the grade inflation.
