Is HRD Certification the Right Choice?
Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD) is the Antwerp-based grading lab that has graded diamonds in the centre of the European diamond trade for over 45 years. HRD is widely respected within the industry and is particularly common on stones flowing through Antwerp's trading floors. Which historically has been a very large slice of the global natural diamond supply.
Stones carrying a HRD certificate trade at about a 167.7% premium over the market baseline in our data. That's the 'GIA effect' at work. Buyers trust the grading rigour and are willing to pay for it. If you're going to resell the stone or want the most conservative paper trail, the premium is real and worth considering.
HRD certificates cover 169,689 listings in our database, and the mix skews heavily natural, 160,924 natural stones versus 8,755 lab-grown. That's the classic pattern for long-established gemological labs whose reputation was built around natural diamond grading.
Most of the HRD-certified inventory we track is in ROUND (69,732 listings). Consistent with round being the default for engagement-ring buyers. If you're shopping fancy shapes, selection thins out quickly across every lab; widening your search to two or more certificate issuers often doubles the available inventory.
HRD is a credible alternative to GIA for natural diamonds and the certificates are accepted by most retailers and insurers, especially in Europe. For American buyers GIA will be more familiar; for European buyers HRD is often priced slightly better for an equivalent grade. Outside Europe, expect slightly thinner market depth.
