How to Read a GIA Diamond Report, Field by Field
A complete walkthrough of every section on a GIA grading report, from the header through to the security seal, and what each field actually means when you are deciding whether to buy.
The 10-digit number printed at the top of every GIA grading report is also a live database query. Type it into GIA Report Check and within seconds you're looking at the same data the lab recorded when the stone was graded. That number is your ground truth, and everything else on the document is an expansion of it.
Most buyers glance at the headline grades and move on. That's a mistake. The report has layers, and knowing them changes how you shop.
What the header tells you before you get to the grades
Every GIA report opens with three identifiers: the report number, the date of issue, and the GIA laboratory location (typically New York, Carlsbad, or Antwerp). The date matters more than most people realise. A report issued in 2008 reflects grading standards from 2008. GIA has tightened its criteria for Excellent cut grades over the years, so a stone graded Excellent fifteen years ago might receive a Very Good today if resubmitted. Not a scandal, just calibration drift. If you're buying a vintage stone with an older report, factor that in.
The report number also tells you which type of report you're looking at. GIA issues several distinct formats:
- A GIA Diamond Grading Report (sometimes called a "full report") covers all four Cs plus a full proportions diagram, an inclusion plot, and a comments field.
- A GIA Diamond Dossier includes the four Cs and a laser inscription but no inclusion plot. Common on stones under 1 carat.
- A GIA Diamond Origin Report adds country-of-origin provenance to the full grading data.
In our index of 14 million diamonds across 110+ retailers, the vast majority of certified stones carry a full Grading Report. Dossiers appear most frequently on smaller rounds under 0.75 carats. If you're comparing two stones and one has a Dossier where the other has a full report, you're missing the inclusion plot on the Dossier stone. That makes clarity comparison harder, and for anything above 1 carat the absence of a plotted diagram is a genuine information gap.
The Diamond Origin Report is worth understanding separately. It adds a country-of-origin determination to the standard grading data and is most common on stones from named mines where provenance carries a market premium. The grading itself, colour, clarity, cut, is identical to a standard full report. You're paying for the provenance documentation, not better grades.
Shape, measurements, and carat weight
Below the header, the report identifies the diamond's shape and cutting style (Round Brilliant, Emerald, Oval Brilliant, and so on) and its measurements in millimetres. For rounds, you'll see a diameter range and a depth, for example 6.40 to 6.43 x 3.98. For fancy shapes, it's length by width by depth.
These measurements are more useful than they look. A 1.0ct round that measures 6.2mm across is cut deep. A 1.0ct round at 6.5mm carries more weight in its diameter than its depth. Neither is automatically wrong, but the difference is visible and affects how large the stone appears in a setting. For fancy shapes, the ratio of length to width is buried in these measurements and never stated directly on the report. A pear at 1.50:1 looks stubby. One at 1.75:1 looks elongated and elegant. Divide length by width yourself; the number you want is right there.
Carat weight is stated to two decimal places (1.23 ct, for example). This is the weight of the loose stone at time of grading. Once set in a ring, you cannot verify carat weight without removing the stone, which is one reason buying loose with a cert before setting is the cleaner approach. A retailer who quotes carat weight on a mounted stone without a cert is asking you to trust their word on the single number that most directly drives price.
The grading results block
This is the section most buyers study closely, and rightly so. Five fields carry most of the weight.
Colour runs from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). The scale has commercial reality baked in: D, E, and F are "colourless"; G, H, I, and J are "near colourless." The practical price jump happens between F and G, and again between H and I. Most buyers can't see the difference between G and H in a mounted round, but the price gap can be several hundred dollars per carat at the 1.5ct mark. That gap exists because the grade names exist. It's not always justified by the visual difference.
Clarity runs from Flawless down through VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, and into Included territory. The critical threshold for most buyers is SI1. A well-cut round at SI1 is usually eye-clean. An SI1 emerald cut often isn't, because the step cut facets act like a magnifying glass on everything inside the stone. The clarity grade alone doesn't tell you whether a stone is eye-clean. The inclusion plot does.
Cut grade covers round brilliants only. GIA doesn't assign a cut grade to fancy shapes; for ovals, pears, cushions, and emeralds there is no equivalent field. For rounds, Excellent is the ceiling, but not all Excellents perform identically, which is precisely why the proportions diagram exists.
Polish and symmetry are each graded Excellent through Poor. A stone graded Excellent for cut but Very Good for polish isn't disqualified, but the proportions deserve closer scrutiny when the ancillary grades fall below Excellent.
Fluorescence sits in its own field: None, Faint, Medium Blue, Strong Blue, and Very Strong Blue are the common descriptors. Strong Blue fluorescence in a D or E colour stone can appear milky or hazy under certain lighting conditions, which is why those stones trade at a discount relative to None fluorescence at the same grade. In an I or J colour stone, that same fluorescence can counteract the yellow tint and make the stone look whiter face up. The report states the fluorescence; the price implication depends entirely on which colour grade it's paired with. A Strong Blue on a D and a Strong Blue on a J are very different buying situations.

Reading the proportions diagram
The proportions block is where many buyers check out. Don't.
Table percentage is the width of the top flat facet expressed as a proportion of average girdle diameter. For round brilliants, 54 to 58% sits in the Excellent range. A 65% table disperses light poorly. A 51% table is unusual but not automatically a problem; it depends on the crown angle it's paired with.
Total depth percentage is the stone's depth divided by average girdle diameter. Rounds in the 59 to 62.5% range tend to perform best. Deeper stones carry hidden weight in the base, weight you're paying for per carat but can't see once the stone is set.
Crown angle is the angle of the upper facets relative to the girdle plane. Around 34 to 35 degrees pairs well with most pavilion angles for strong light return and fire.
Pavilion angle is the most important single number on the proportions diagram. At 40.6 to 41.0 degrees, light reflects efficiently back through the table. At 42 degrees, brightness starts leaking through the pavilion. At 40.0 degrees or below, you risk a fisheye effect, a pale reflection ring visible through the table in direct overhead light.
Girdle is described as a thickness range (Thin to Medium, Medium to Slightly Thick, and so on). An Extremely Thin girdle chips under setting pressure. Extremely Thick adds dead weight with no visual return.
Culet should read None or Pointed. A Medium or Large culet appears as a visible black dot through the table, visible to the naked eye in a set ring.
None of these numbers appear in the headline grades. A 1.50ct G VS2 Excellent round with a 42-degree pavilion will look noticeably worse than a 1.40ct G VS2 Excellent with a 40.8-degree pavilion, despite the heavier carat weight. Same colour. Same clarity. Same cut grade on paper. Meaningfully different diamond in practice. The proportions diagram is where you catch that before you buy.

The inclusion plot and what it actually shows
The inclusion plot is a top-down view and a side-profile diagram of the stone with symbols marking the position and type of each clarity characteristic. The symbol legend is printed on the report. Red symbols are internal characteristics (inclusions); green symbols are external characteristics (blemishes).
Common internal symbols include a small dot for a pinpoint (a tiny crystal, usually invisible at 10x unless densely clustered), a small circle for a crystal inclusion, parallel lines for needles, a cloud symbol for a group of pinpoints, and feather lines for fractures. A feather near the girdle, where prongs apply pressure during setting, is a durability concern the grade number doesn't surface on its own.
The plot's real value is positional. An SI1 stone with its primary inclusion sitting dead centre under the table is harder to disguise once set than one with the same grade where the inclusion sits near the girdle and can be tucked under a prong. Same grade. Completely different buying situation.
Fancy shapes demand extra attention here. A VS2 emerald cut with a cloud of pinpoints centred under the table will face up hazier than a VS2 round with an equivalent cloud sitting near the pavilion. The grade is the same. The appearance isn't.
If you're shopping online and the retailer hasn't published the inclusion plot, pulling the full report directly from GIA takes under two minutes and gives you the complete picture, including plot, proportions, and comments. Retailers who obscure the cert number are making it harder for you to do this, which is worth noting.
The comments field
This is the most underread section of the report. Most buyers skip it entirely. That's expensive.
GIA uses the comments field for observations that don't fit neatly into the standard grade fields. A handful appear frequently across our index, and each carries a specific price implication.

"Surface graining is not shown" sounds harmless. It isn't always. Graining can create a watery or oily appearance that's invisible in flat photography but obvious in person or on video. If you see this comment on a stone you're considering, ask the retailer for a video clip under direct light before committing to anything. Some stones with this comment look perfectly clean. Others don't.
"Laser drilled" is the hardest flag. GIA discloses it in the comments every single time, without exception. A laser-drilled stone is not the same asset as an untreated one of the same grade. The drill hole is permanent, it creates a structural path into the stone, and the resale market prices laser-drilled stones at a significant discount.
"Clarity characteristics not shown" sounds more alarming than it is. It usually applies to a scattering of tiny pinpoints too numerous to individually map, which often has no meaningful visual impact at all. Treat it as a prompt to look more carefully at the clarity grade and to request a video, not as an automatic red flag.
"HPHT annealed" and "irradiated" are in a category of their own. These treatments aren't fraud, and GIA reports them accurately every time. But natural colour commands a serious premium over treated colour at the same grade, and the difference at resale is substantial. If either comment appears on a report, the stone must be priced accordingly, and any retailer presenting it at natural-colour prices should be questioned directly.
Security features and how to verify
Every GIA Grading Report includes a laser inscription on the girdle of the stone with the report number. Under 10x magnification, you should be able to read the report number there. If the girdle inscription doesn't match the number on the certificate, stop the transaction. That's not a minor discrepancy; it means either the report has been swapped or the stone has.
The paper document carries several protection features: a holographic seal on the front, microprinting visible under magnification along the borders, and security threads embedded in the paper stock. These exist because counterfeit GIA reports do circulate, particularly on more valuable stones. The physical features are a first pass at verification, not a final one.
The most reliable verification is digital. Go to GIA Report Check, enter the report number, and compare every field against the certificate you've been shown. Colour, clarity, carat, measurements, fluorescence, comments, all of it. GIA's database is the canonical record, and it's free to access. A retailer who can only show you a scan of the report and won't allow real-time digital verification is worth pressing on that point.

Cross-retailer price spreads for identically graded natural round brilliants average around 55% in our current data. Two stones with identical GIA grades, identical carat weights, and matching fluorescence can sit 55% apart in price without anything on their respective reports explaining the gap. The cert verifies the grade. Pricing is a separate question entirely, and one that requires comparison across the full market, not trust in a single retailer's ticket price.
Start with the report number. Pull the full report from GIA directly. Work through every section, not just the four Cs. And if anything in the comments field is unfamiliar, that's the right moment to ask more questions, not fewer.
