FL (Flawless): The highest clarity grade. No inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification to a skilled grader.

·

FL, or Flawless, represents the top of the GIA clarity scale. A diamond achieves this grade when a trained gemmologist cannot detect inclusions or surface blemishes at 10x magnification. Flawless diamonds are rare. They represent less than one percent of gem-quality diamonds mined or grown. The distinction is meaningful only when graded by a major laboratory such as GIA; self-described "flawless" stones without a lab report typically do not meet the standard. FL diamonds trade at a substantial premium over IF (Internally Flawless) despite the visual difference being invisible to the unaided eye.

Frequently asked questions

How rare is a Flawless diamond?

Fewer than 1% of gem-quality diamonds reach the FL grade. Among certified stones tracked on Carat Hunter across lab-grown and natural origins, FL represents a small fraction of active inventory.

Does FL look different from VVS1 to the naked eye?

No. Neither FL nor VVS1 inclusions are visible without 10x magnification. The price gap reflects rarity, not appearance.

Is an FL diamond worth the premium over IF?

For most buyers no; the visual difference is zero. FL commands a premium because it is rarer, which matters to collectors but rarely to wearers.

Can lab-grown diamonds achieve FL clarity?

Yes. Lab-grown stones are graded against the same clarity scale as natural diamonds and a meaningful share achieves FL.

Does FL guarantee eye-cleanliness?

Yes, by definition. Any grade from FL through VS1 will typically appear eye-clean in a standard setting.
