IF (Internally Flawless): Internally Flawless: no inclusions visible at 10x magnification; only minor surface blemishes permitted.

·

IF sits one step below FL on the GIA clarity scale. The internal structure is free of inclusions under 10x magnification, but a grader may note minor surface blemishes such as polish lines or extra facets. These are external features. They can often be polished out, and do not affect how the stone looks to the unaided eye. IF diamonds are commercially the top of most jewellers' inventory and are frequently chosen for high-value engagement rings and investment pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between IF and FL?

FL has no inclusions AND no blemishes. IF has no inclusions but may have minor surface blemishes. The visual appearance is identical.

Is IF a good buy?

IF is a premium grade with excellent resale potential, but for appearance alone VS1 or VS2 will look identical in a ring.

Can IF surface blemishes be polished out?

Sometimes. A minor polish line can often be removed with re-polishing, though this may slightly reduce carat weight.

Are IF diamonds common in lab-grown?

More common than in natural. Lab-grown production can control growth conditions tightly, so IF yields are higher.

Does IF affect brilliance?

Not meaningfully. Brilliance is driven by cut, not clarity. An IF diamond with Good cut will be less brilliant than a VS2 with Excellent cut.
