Diamond Cut Guide, Why Cut Matters More Than the Other 3Cs
The one grade that changes how your diamond actually performs in the real world
Cut is the one C you can feel across a dinner table.
Colour, clarity, and carat weight are all static properties of the rough crystal that came out of the ground. Cut is what a craftsperson does with that rough stone, and it determines whether your diamond throws light across a room or sits dull in its setting like frosted glass. Nothing else on the certificate comes close to mattering as much for the performance of the finished stone in real-world wear.
We see this play out constantly across the 14 million diamonds in our index. Two stones with identical grades on paper, same colour, same clarity, same carat weight, can perform completely differently because one was cut to ideal proportions and the other wasn't. That performance gap is visible to the naked eye in daylight. The gap between a VS1 and a VS2 in the same stone, on the other hand, requires a 10x loupe and a trained eye to locate.
That's the buyer-priority argument for cut. Not a close call.
Five grades, one shape
For round brilliant diamonds, GIA grades cut on a five-point scale: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, and Poor. The grading combines measurable geometric proportions with direct assessments of brightness, fire, scintillation, and overall craftsmanship. It applies to round brilliants only, a limitation we'll return to.
Four proportion variables do most of the work:
Table percentage. The flat top facet expressed as a percentage of average girdle diameter. For Excellent grades, GIA has established that table percentages between 53 and 58 percent tend to produce optimal light return. Push past 63 percent and the stone looks glassy and flat, as though someone filed the top off it.
Depth percentage. Total depth from table to culet as a percentage of girdle diameter. Excellent rounds cluster between 59 and 62.5 percent. Too shallow and light escapes through the pavilion instead of returning through the crown; too deep and the stone looks small for its weight and carries a darkened centre when viewed directly.
Crown angle. The angle of the upper facets relative to the girdle plane. Excellent cut rounds typically fall between 31.5 and 36.5 degrees. Crown angle controls scintillation and the balance between brilliance (white light return) and fire (coloured light dispersal). It's also the proportion most visibly affected by cutter shortcuts taken to preserve rough weight.
Pavilion angle. The angle of the lower facets. This is the most sensitive variable in the system. Between 40.6 and 41.0 degrees produces maximum light return in the Excellent range. A pavilion angle just two degrees outside that window creates a visible dark circle in the centre of the stone that no lighting condition will eliminate.
These proportions don't work in isolation. A 34-degree crown paired with a 41-degree pavilion will outperform a theoretically better crown paired with a 42-degree pavilion. GIA's grading algorithm accounts for these interactions, which is why two stones can share every individual proportion figure and still land in different cut grades.

Fair and Poor cut stones aren't just less brilliant. They often carry visible optical artefacts: a fisheye, which is a pale ring visible through the crown caused by a too-shallow pavilion, or a nail head, the dark centre that appears when the pavilion is too steep. You'll see either immediately in natural light. No colour or clarity grade compensates for them.
Very Good is more interesting than its position on the scale suggests. Within the Very Good range, stones with table percentages in the 56 to 58 percent range and pavilion angles near 40.8 degrees can perform very close to Excellent. The difference between a well-proportioned Very Good and a weak Excellent is smaller than most buyers expect. Check the numbers, not just the grade label.
Excellent versus Good, a worked example
Take two 1 carat G VS2 round brilliants. Both are GIA certified. Both are eye-clean. On paper, they are identical.
In person, they are not.
The Excellent cut stone exhibits what the trade calls hearts and arrows patterning when viewed through an optical symmetry viewer. More relevantly to everyone else at the table, it returns virtually all the light that enters it back through the crown. The pavilion facets function like a precision mirror system, each angled to redirect photons upward. Under any normal room lighting, this stone flashes with each movement of the hand. It looks alive.
The Good cut stone in this comparison carries a table percentage of 64 percent and a depth of 64.5 percent. Neither figure is catastrophic in isolation. Together, they mean a meaningful portion of incoming light exits through the base of the stone rather than returning through the crown. Viewed directly in moderate light, the stone appears grey through the centre. The brilliance is muted. The scintillation pattern is irregular and sparse.
This is the performance gap no other C produces at the same grade distance. A G versus an H colour is invisible once the stone is set, regardless of what the certificate says. A VS2 versus an eye-clean SI1 looks identical to most people without specialist training. But Excellent versus Good cut in identical specifications? That difference is real, repeatable, and your eye finds it without any instruction.
The premium for Excellent over Good in 1 carat rounds is worth paying. But don't pay top-of-range prices for a stone sitting at the outer edge of Excellent. A 36-degree crown and a 41.0-degree pavilion will both pass the GIA Excellent threshold, and they will both underperform the tighter ideal proportions. Check the report before you buy.
Fancy shapes and the missing grade
GIA grades cut for round brilliants only. Every other shape, ovals, cushions, emerald cuts, marquise, pears, radiants, asschers, none of them receives an overall cut grade. The certificate shows polish and symmetry, but not a holistic assessment.
This creates a real information gap for buyers.
GIA's decision is defensible. There's no single ideal proportion set for an oval the way there is for a round. Oval outlines vary by length to width ratio, and a 1.30 ratio produces a very different look than a 1.55. Buyer preference here is genuinely diverse, and imposing a standard where the aesthetic goal itself varies would be arbitrary.
The problem is that the absence of a grade gets exploited. A retailer can stock oval diamonds with poor light performance, a severe bow tie effect, or weak spread, and nothing on the certificate flags any of it. Polish: Excellent. Symmetry: Excellent. Certificate looks fine. Stone performs poorly.
For all fancy shapes, Excellent polish and symmetry are the minimum starting point. Good or Fair on either signals visible craftsmanship problems; don't rationalise it away.
For step cuts, read the clarity plot with more care than you would for a round. Emerald, asscher, and baguette cuts are windows. They don't scatter light the way a round does; they reflect it in broad, open flashes. Any inclusion near the centre of the table shows immediately in the kind of lighting your stone will actually live in. A VS2 that would be perfectly eye-clean in a round brilliant may not be in an emerald cut. The open facet structure has no place to hide inclusions. For ovals, pears, and marquise cuts, the bow tie is the variable most buyers aren't prepared for. Every elongated shape produces some degree of bow tie by geometry: a dark shadow across the midsection where the facet angles can't redirect light as efficiently as in the centre of the stone. A subtle bow tie adds contrast and depth. A heavy one makes the stone look like it has a hole in it. Length to width ratios between 1.35 and 1.50 for ovals tend to produce a manageable bow tie while still appearing elongated. Beyond 1.55, it becomes more pronounced. No certificate will tell you this. You need actual video in natural light, not studio photography with a ring light designed to suppress the shadow.
The proportions that separate a great Excellent from a mediocre one
Buyers who check the headline cut grade and stop there are leaving real money on the table. The Excellent category covers a genuine range, and stones at the outer edge of it perform differently from stones at the centre.
The proportions below represent what many in the trade call the inner tier of Excellent, sometimes referred to informally as ideal cut (AGS uses that term formally; GIA doesn't, but the performance concept translates):

A stone falling outside the inner column but inside the full Excellent range can still be a beautiful diamond. When comparing two Excellent-graded rounds at similar prices, though, these figures reveal the real difference between them. Pavilion angle is the figure to watch most closely. A shift from 40.8 to 41.2 degrees creates a measurable reduction in how much light the stone returns through the crown. Small on paper. Visible in person under any overhead light source. If you're comparing two stones at the same price and the proportion reports differ mostly on pavilion angle, take the lower number.
How cut changes every other decision
The question of cut versus clarity, which matters more, has a clear answer: cut does, in almost every practical purchasing scenario. But buyers frame this as a trade off when it's actually a sequencing question.
Cut first. Every time. A D Flawless diamond in a Poor cut grade is an expensive mistake. The reverse is not true: an H SI1 in an Excellent cut can be gorgeous, genuinely eye-clean, and outperform higher-graded stones in mediocre cuts in any real setting.
Once cut is settled at Excellent, or at well-proportioned Very Good with checked figures, the question becomes which of the remaining Cs to prioritise within your budget. That depends on stone size, shape, and setting metal. Colour matters more in stones above 1.5 carats and in white gold or platinum settings where warmth in the stone reads clearly against the metal. The short version: in a round brilliant under 1.5 carats in yellow or rose gold, you can often drop to H or I colour and SI1 clarity with no visible compromise, freeing budget for a better cut or more carat weight. In an emerald cut in platinum, the calculus is different.
One data point worth carrying: a well-cut 0.90 carat Excellent will look larger and brighter face up than a 1.00 carat at Good cut. The weight advantage disappears when the cut is poor enough to kill the light return. Buyers who optimise for carat weight at the expense of cut grade are consistently disappointed by how the stone performs in wear.
What the market charges for cut quality
Cut grade carries a real and consistent premium in the round brilliant market, the only category where direct comparison is possible across our index. Excellent-graded round brilliants sit at a meaningful premium over Good-cut stones at equivalent colour, clarity, and carat weight. The size of that premium varies by carat tier and retailer, but the direction doesn't change.
The cross-retailer spread for natural rounds in our index averages around 55 percent between the cheapest and most expensive option at the same specification. Cut is a significant driver of that range. A retailer charging top prices for a stone sitting at the outer edge of Excellent, technically graded Excellent but with a 36-degree crown and a 41.0-degree pavilion, is not delivering the same value as a competitor selling a tighter-proportion Excellent at the same price. The certificates look identical. The stones don't.
Checking proportions before you commit isn't paranoid. It's how you avoid paying Excellent prices for outer-edge Excellent performance.
Lab-grown rounds average around $2,135 across our index, versus $8,447 for natural equivalents at comparable specs. Cut grade distribution in lab-grown has improved substantially as production methods matured, and Excellent cut lab-grown rounds are neither rare nor significantly more expensive relative to Very Good in the same category. Cut is the foundation. Every other C sits on top of it.
Settle for a mediocre cut while chasing a better colour grade or a lower clarity price, and you've paid for performance the stone can't deliver. The certificate looks good. The stone doesn't perform.
