VS1 (Very Slightly Included 1): Minor inclusions, visible to a skilled grader at 10x magnification but eye-clean in almost all cases.
VS1 is the most popular clarity grade for engagement rings. Inclusions are easy for a gemmologist to find at 10x magnification but are invisible to the unaided eye across all shapes and sizes. For buyers prioritising appearance and value, VS1 is almost always the smarter choice over VVS2 or VVS1; the visual quality is identical and the price is markedly lower.

Frequently asked questions
Is every VS1 diamond eye-clean?
In most shapes and sizes, yes. The exception is large step cuts (emerald, asscher) above 2ct where inclusion visibility can depend on position; check the plot on the lab report.
VS1 or VS2: which offers better value?
VS2 at the same spec typically costs 10-20% less. If the stone is eye-clean at VS2 (verified via the plot), VS2 is usually the better buy.
How visible are VS1 inclusions in person?
Not visible at all without magnification in almost every case. A jeweller examining the stone with a loupe will locate them easily; an observer at normal viewing distance will not.
What's the most common VS1 inclusion?
Crystals, feathers, and clouds: small mineral inclusions or fractures within the diamond. These do not affect durability at VS1.
Is VS1 suitable for a one-carat round?
Yes. VS1 is the recommended clarity for 1-2ct rounds where the buyer wants lab-certified clarity with maximum value.
